Loose motifs for the month:
Ideas: Nothing groundbreaking here. Nearly half of the days I marked “none” because of busy life things. I only try to log what I consciously set out to do. Maybe this means I am learning how to chillax more? I am going to choose to believe this.
Music: I started piano lessons again. A lot of my music exploration went into esoteric hip hop, one of my favorite genres. There’s more piano than usual due to taking lessons, and still a bit of experimental hardcore. I kept a steady rehearsal with my band working on some new rock cover songs (Linkin Park, Chevelle, Bad Bunny), but fell off the wagon with double kick drum practice. This log is good to help me measure what I manage, and I know what to change for the next month (if I want to change anything at all). I’m going to start logging practice time on here, it helps me stay more consistent.
Reading/ writing: Not much writing getting done, which is okay. Same with reading. An article here and there to tickle the brain strings. As I am writing this in June, I have made better headway with reading this month.
**I did a video podcast with my friend Jeff (located here on Substack or here on Youtube) where we talked about him shifting from federal service to a creative career. I enjoyed the conversation and am planning to do more video podcasts in the future.**
This log is sorta measuring, sorta recording.
I felt like I squandered a lot of time consuming useless things and I wanted a way see it. It keeps me on track in a way and I have found that since I have been doing this I have been more consistent at reading, drumming, and giving whatever it is I am doing my full attention.
When we create we draw from the sources from which we are inspired. If you want to make good things you have to consume good things. You will see the quality of what you produce increase when you increase the quality of what you allow into your mind.
Looking at it from a different angle: garbage in-garbage out.
Drumming and writing are important to me. A film, an article, or even a dish can inspire to create a musical idea, a concept, a scene. Everything can be mixed with and inspired by something else and what is ultimately produced is taste.
Your taste.
Self education is just as important as being inspired by a film or music.
This is an experiment, so it may change and look different from month to month.
