four things #15
romance by fontaines d.c., batman killing joke, freebird shaver for baldies, nautilus magazine
Music:
Album “Romance” by Fontaines D.C. Man, I really love this record. I remember listening to this band years ago. They fell off my radar, lost in the fold, but boy this record really hit it on the mark. There are ballads, alternative rock, GUITARS (!!!), lush Deftones-esque swirls, punk. Its a sonically wide-reaching album that was written with stellar songwriting, and recorded and engineered with the utmost quality. Modern rock isn’t dead, it’s just different from what you heard when you were a blossoming young adult. There’s a whole world of incredible music out there, you just gotta go find it. Listen loud.
Book:
Batman the Killing Joke by Alan Moore and Brian Bolland. Phenomenal storytelling and artwork. Batman and Spiderman have always been my favorite superheroes for different reasons. I like Batman for the darker side of our psychology. When reading about Carl Jung and the “shadow self” I found myself thinking about Batman and the Joker. This graphic novel is violent and disturbing, and the depth of it’s storytelling goes deeper and deeper the more you pay attention. It’s quite short, I read it in about an hour. They recently adapted it into an animated film (I haven’t seen it).
Gear:
Freebird Shaver. I am not trying to be an advertiser here, but here’s a short consumer review: I have been shaving my head with traditional clippers for years. I occasionally treat myself by finding a barber in town who shaves using the classic straight razor. I really like the close shave and wanted to get as close as possible in mimicking it at my house. After some light research I chose the Freebird Flex Series Shaver, and it’s fantastic. Cuts close, easy cleanup, and it’s cheaper than some competitors. I might do a separate post on my foray into being a baldie, and what I have done step by step. But I think it’s important to say: if you are balding and are on the fence about shaving it all of, just go for it. It’s awesome. It’s like being in an exclusive club.
Subscription:
Nautilus. Nautilus is an online science magazine with high quality, peer-reviewed stories (they also have a hybrid plan where they mail you six print magazines along with your online subscription). In our age of consuming free, short, usually low-quality content I have been looking for something with more depth vs. breadth. I still read books, but now I am able to trinkle in an article a day and whoaaa.. this magazine is well worth the subscription. I love science, art, and writing, am infinitely curious, so this magazine seemed like it was made just for me.
See ya next time. Bye for now.
